Time for Trick or Treats

Halloween wraps fear in innocence, as though it were a slightly sour sweet. Let terror, then, be turned into a treat... - Nicholas Gordon

Time.

Time is a tricky thing. It’s kind of like your mind, it plays tricks on you and it’s something you really can’t trust. I say this because didn’t the trees just bud? Wasn’t it just yesterday that I was able to sit outside on the balcony covered head to toe in sunscreen with my cooling fan hanging nicely around my neck?

Last week I was talking with my Niece and she was lamenting that time moves so slowly, especially at school lol especially especially during math class. For real though, I completely understand that! When I was in university, I had an elderly professor that stood at the front of the class at his podium and droned on and on and on. I mean, the class was already the history of the Byzantine empire, which was dry enough, but that man made me literally prop my eyelids open waiting for the minutes to SLOWLY tick by lol. I also remember waiting for Christmas morning when it felt like forever until Santa would arrive! And didn’t school clocks seem to stop about a month before summer break was set to begin? I used to think so at least.

Nowadays, I have a much different perspective of time. At what age do we stop thinking, “I have to wait forever“ and start thinking, “there just aren’t enough hours in a day”? I mean, SBean is literally counting down the days to her birthday crying for anybody who can hear that she has to wait 38 more days to finally be 13. Meanwhile, I’m like I only have 38 days left for presents to get here during the Canada postal strike.

Time is weird and it’s about to get even weirder on November 2 when the time actually changes. Ugh. Oh and the full moon on November 5th!?! Plus I just got my infusion date and it’s November 4th. Oh boy, I can’t wait. 🤪

As I was saying, time flies! I can’t believe it is time for Halloween Treats already! I say that despite the fact that this morning I had to go through waaaay too many aisles of CHRISTMAS stuff at the grocery store to find Halloween candy. Poor Charlie Brown! We are already setting up his little tree before we even have a chance to wait for Linus’s Great Pumpkin! Well, I say let’s fully celebrate the spooky season BEFORE we start the holiday season! I even read 2 books that I think would help give you all the Halloween vibes. Hopefully, these fun treats can help you get into the season, enjoy!

These Ghostly Pizza Pockets were SO much fun! They were like little spooky strombolis! You can make these anyway you want, use fresh dough from the grocery store or make your own. Use whatever pizza toppings you like and whatever cookie cutter you have. These are very versatile and super delicious.

We made these Cheesy Bones to go with our Ghosts because we always have cheese sticks with pizza, actually they are mine and SBean’s favourite part. These were super yummy and SO easy to make. We used fresh dough we made in the bread maker but you could buy some at the grocery store in the frozen section. The bones were easy to make but we found it difficult to pile the cheese on as the bones baked up and puffed. Maybe put the cheese on at the beginning? You might have to tent foil over to make sure they don’t burn though. Let me know if you try and have a better way of doing it!

Alchemy of Secrets by Stephanie Garber (this book didn’t fit into any of my challenge categories. It just came out and I just couldn’t wait for next fall to read it) What a cool concept for a book! I love mythology. This book is a combination of urban myths, magic, and dark academia. Holland St. James (what a cool name by the way) has taken the mysterious college course, Folklore 517. This is a course that’s not available on the website and you have to follow clues to find the next classroom location. Awesome! The professor of this class is also her thesis advisor, or was. Holland and her “boyfriend” try out one of the urban legends by finding the Watch Man who tells them when they will die. Holland is told that she has 24 hours to live, but to extend her time she needs to find the Alchemical Heart. So Holland begins her magical treasure hunt across Los Angeles. There is also a backstory about old Hollywood and her parents who were Hollywood royalty, but died in a mysterious murder/suicide 15 years prior. This was a fun book where I really had no clue where it was going. I’m excited for the next book to learn more about January and answer all the questions that we are left with.

SBean sent me a Tik Tok of a Mom making special Halloween gifts for her teenage children with a little message saying, “just saying”. LOL They were super cute so I decided to make my own Boo Baskets for the Kids this year. I went to The Dollar Store and to Superstore for everything that went into the baskets and probably spent $30 on each. I mostly picked out anything orange and edible but also stuff that they would want and/or need, like body wash and chai tea. I had fun making them, the Kids were really surprised and I loved watching them go through the baskets with huge happy grins on their faces.

What dessert can you make with just 4 little ingredients? Why, these Halloween Brownies of course! Not everything has to be made from scratch. Not everything has to take hours of time in the kitchen. Sometimes you can use a box mix and a jar of fluff and make something AMAZING! I saw a reel of brownies that looked like this and thought, we can do that! And we did. They were super Halloweeny because they mysteriously vanished the same day that I made them! LOL

This Witch’s Sparkle is a magical cocktail that uses just a few ingredients and is such a pretty drink. HBear saw it and said it looked like a witch’s potion! The bubbles of the champagne and the delicate floral liquor mixed with a little for colouring is the perfect drink for your Halloween celebrations!

Resistance of Witches by Morgan Ryan About a Politician. This is a story that begins in 1940 about the witches of England, helping Prime Minister, Winston Churchill against Hitler and his coven of third Reich witches. Fascinating! My mom used to call me Sybil when I was misbehaving because she said Sybil was my alternate personality. I don’t trust her or any of the witches at the Academy. I really liked Lydia and the friends she made along her journey to stop Hitler from collecting powerful magical items to use against anyone who tried to stop them. Rebecca a Jewish girl from France and a black American pretending to be French become her gang of resistance fighters. I loved learning more about voodoo and Henry’s story was very interesting. I also liked Lydia’s mom, Evelyn and her talent with tarot cards and tea leaves. This was a good and easy read with a different angle on both Witches and WWII.

Thank you to Marsha in the Middle for featuring my October: 7 Day Mark Plan at their Weekend Traffic Jam Link Party last week.

No new podcast this week because I literally slept all week. I prepped for my infusion this week by getting my annual vaccinations which left me sore and fatigued. HBear enjoyed time with her little buddy at school and we sent a box of clothes to my niece and she did a fashion show showing off her new duds and her new TS album!!! I finished my reading challenge, SBean did photos and made a video (coming soon) with her MT group, the Kids had a blast at Penticon, I received my last flower bouquet of the season, and my MMBesty brought home a tasty tequila treat for us from her latest travel adventures.

            1. All the recipes look so delicious! I love the idea of Boo baskets! My middle son is coming home from college this weekend too.. I may just head to the store today to see what I can put together for my 3 guys.

            2. These are so cute! I used to read the kids all these Halloween spooky picture books in the lead up to Halloween but not now, no seasons reading for the near adults. It’s sad really. I’d sort of forgotten about it until your post. Must dig them out and have a look #MonthlyBookworms

            4. Thanks for sharing all those recipes, For the bones I’d suggest that you, reserve some of the garlic butter mixture, or make extra, and mix the cheese in with it. Then add it to the top and you should find it will ‘stick’.
Alchemy of Secrets is on my TBR

              Have a lovely week

              1. What a fantastic idea! Thank you so much! Alchemy of Secrets was very good, I can’t believe we have to wait another year for the sequel lol. Thanks for stopping by!
