The belly is a demon. It doesn’t remember how well you treated it yesterday; it’ll cry out for more tomorrow. ― Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich

A Day in the life of Ivan Denisovich… Me
When I was in grade 10 I was forced to read One Day in the life of Ivan Denisovich. Really all I remember is MORTAR!! LOL But whenever I think about a full day the title always comes back to me J
3:10am HBear comes in to our room. “Mommy Daddy I just have to go to the bathroom.” Thank you for telling us…. Not.
3:20am “Mommy Daddy I am done now”
3:30am AHHHHHHHH SBean is now up.
3:35am I am trying to rock the Bean back to bed, HBear is laying in her bed coughing and listening to SBean WAIL.
3:40 I feed the baby, will that work?
3:50am NO
3:55am Invite the Bear into our bed… for the 1st time.
4:25am SBean calms down finally
6:55am SBean is awake and wanting breakfast, this wakes the Bear up and now she wants breakfast too.
7:30am Both girls are fed. I look around the kitchen and sigh. Last night I got the broths emptied after Sparks and while Ninja was at bowling and both girls were in hysterics. I may have left a bit of a mess in the kitchen, and now I pull up my sleeves and get started.
7:45am Empty the dishwasher, the dry dishes in the sink, clean my pots for later use, and wash the counters and stovetop down.
8:00am Make HBear’s lunch, 12 bean soup, a rice cake, a banana, yogurt and carrots.
8:10am Help HBear finish getting dressed, wet down her hair, blow dry her hair, teeth brushing, water bottle filling, and library book put into backpack.
8:20am get SBean into her jacket and into the van. Do the same with HBear.
8:25am Quickly throw a load of laundry in.
8:30am And we’re off!
8:35 Get to school, do NOT get a great parking spot so I wisely put SBean into the wrap for the long walk.
8:45 Get into the packed coatroom and help HBear get out of the stuff I just helped her get into. BUT… we haven’t had 1 meltdown this morning so I am feeling quite good!
8:50 Realize that the note in HBear’s Home Notice Bag last night talked about a family morning… and it is THIS morning! Awesome! “Mommy you’re staying right?” Of course HBear I wouldn’t miss it.
8:55 Sit down on a miniature chair and listen to the school announcements while SBean struggles in the carrier. Thank Goodness I wore it today and I’m not trying to hold her while participating!
9:00 The shaving cream comes out. I now have a table of 4 kids drawing their names in shaving cream while bouncing the Bean who is quite ready for her nap.
9:15 Clean up, kiss and walk back to the van, struggle to get the baby out, strapped into her seat and pick up my cold coffee that I left in the front. Ahhhhh.
9:20 Home. Get the baby out, fed and down for her nap.
9:40 Change over the laundry.
9:45 Start the bathrooms… duh duh duh duhhhhhhh.

10:45 Fold the laundry and start the bedding and SBean’s highchair cover.
10:55 SBean is awake and ready to play. Change her and play blocks and keyboard.
11:25 Dust and begin vacuuming.
11:35 Neighbor pops over to remind me I am looking after her cats next week.
11:37 Friendly neighborhood JW sees his chance and also comes to the door.
11:50 Get lunch going. Let’s start with a banana!
11:55 As SBean eats her banana I skim the fat off my chicken broth.

12:00 Get my beef broth out and do the same J SBean is done her banana, I have soup cooking so I get out some cottage cheese… apparently I am washing the floors next LOL

12:05 Feed SBean her 12 bean soup, the last of my freezer stocks! YEAH Ninja is home, HE feeds the Bean lol
12:10 Cut my veggies and start preparing my Golden Fall Soup!

Golden Fall Soup

Adapted from The Crepes of Wrath
1 pound potatoes, cubed
5 medium-sized carrots, chopped
2 large leeks, chopped (just the whites and light green)
5 cloves of garlic, not peeled and smashed
cup olive oil
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
½ teaspoon ground cumin
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
a small pinch of nutmeg
a small pinch of granulated sugar
10 cups chicken stock
Preheat your oven to 400.
12:23 Realize I heated my smokie up for 11 minutes instead of 1 and throw out my darken little smokie I was planning on having for lunch L

12:30 Get my veggies into the oven
SOUP CONT.
Place all of your chopped vegetables on a baking sheet (try to keep them all the same size for better roasting), along with your garlic cloves, and drizzle with your olive oil, then sprinkle with your spices. Roast the vegetables for 30 minutes or so, until fork-tender. Turn at the halfway mark.

12:35 Little boobie milk, a few songs and a story and… Shit I forgot her bedding is in the dryer. Ninja to the rescue! And the Bean is down for nap #2!
12:50 Flip my veggies and begin chopping veggies for my Turkey Noodle Soup.
12:52 Doorbell, it is the heating guy, come to do our annual furnace maintainace.
12:55 Ninja asks “Is there anything else I can do for you?” Actually I need a roast out of the freezer for tomorrow’s dinner. Thanks! “Here it is, I am going to wash the truck, bye J

1:00 Realize I forgot to finish the en suite bathroom earlier so quickly head back to do that!
1:10 Go to freezer to get some veggies and notice the light on? Go in and see the 1 freezer wide open and half our cow sitting on the other. Call Ninja UMMMMMM? WTF?
1:15 Ninja comes home to clean it up while my oven beeps that the veggies are ready.
1:20 Bye again… door bangs… SBean wakes up!
1:25 Make myself a quick ham sandwich
1:30 Might as well get out the food processor, SBean is still crying.
SOUP CONT.
Take off the garlic peel and add all to your pot. Then add stock.
Use food processor and in batches pulse until smooth. When the texture is to your liking, por back into pot and bring to a simmer. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.

I now cool and portion for lunches and for family dinners.

1:40 Change loads and put sheets back on our bed.
1:45 Go change SBean, more boobie milk and lay back down.
1:55 Continue chopping veggies for my next soup J
Turkey Noodle Soup
Turkey Broth
2 carrots, diced
¾ cup corn
¾ cup peas
¾ cup edamame beans
2 celery stalks, diced
2 cloves garlic, pressed
2 leeks, whites only, sliced
½ tablespoon cider vinegar
2 bay leaves
2 chicken bouillon cubes (if needed)
A handful of thyme, rosemary, parsley and sage
Add oil to pan. On medium heat add garlic and leeks. As they get soft and fragrant add celery and carrots. Add chopped herbs.

When they are getting soft add them to the broth. Add all your turkey meat that you cleaned off the bones. Add bay leaves. Season soup with salt and pepper and add cider vinegar. If you taste it and it is lacking (mine because I added 2 cups of water) add a bouillon cube or 2 J

Simmer for 45 minutes.

2:45 Ninja goes to get HBear and I go see SBean who slept for 15 minutes and is now up… again.

2:50 Print up my Groupon and sit down with SBean for a minute
3:00 Ninja and HBear get home. Playtime!!!

3:20 Start… the DISHES!
3:35 Portion my Fall soup
3:4o More soup time
SOUP CONT.
Add Edamame beans, corn, and peas to soup. Bring to boil and add 1 cup of alphabet pasta. Cook for 9 minutes. Turn off. Cool. Portion.

3:45 Get clothes out for… picture time! I bought a Groupon a few weeks ago to get the kids picture taken at WalMart. Today is the day!
4:00 Get kids dressed and combed, they are ready J
4:25 Off to WalMart!
4:35 Take back PJ’s that didn’t fit.
4:40 HBear has a full blown meltdown and Ninja takes her to the van for timeout.
4:50 Pay for 2 packs of socks and a Oh Henry
5:00 SAY CHEESE!
5:25 Still haven’t got shot of both smiling at the same time.
5:35 SBean is SO done. She throws back her whole body and her head smashes into HBear’s cheekbone.
5:36 Photoshoot done.
5:40 I pull a bawling HBear to the bathroom. It is closed for cleaning.
5:45 Get to the frozen vegetable aisle. Put a bag of frozen peas on her face.
5:50 Go back to the studio and wait to pay. The computers crash. Of course they do. Ninja takes the kids to the van as we  decide our family dinner at Boston Pizza is probably not a great idea.
6:00 pull up at McDonalds L
6:10 Pull up at Ninja’s parents to bring in the mail (they are on a cruise). Eat “dinner”.
6:30 Give the kids a bubblebath.
7:30 Get home, unpack the van
7:45 Do HBear’s 60 minute challenge and 5 minute reading, brush teeth.
8:00 Bedtime. Songs, story, kisses, Boobie milk.
8:10 ANTM!!! Good night!
