White Chocolate Chip Cranberry Cookies & So It Begins

The amount of time and energy we spend putting up and taking down holiday decorations tells me our ‘top of the food chain’ claim is invalid.

Linda in Disguise

This was the start of it. The most busy wonderful time of the year.

You all know what I am talking about don’t try to deny it. This is the time of year when volunteers are pushed their limits, recitals push nervous children to the edge, and parents who have stored up all there patience for a year just to get through the next month… Lose their shit.

The holiday excitement is in the air and for our house it’s amplified because we have 2 birthdays to go through before the Christmas holiday even begins 😳.

I was at the bank earlier this week discussing with a few of the ladies how busy this season is, starting this week. One of the ladies really put things in perspective for me. She said, “I am busy too but I only wish I was busy in the same way you are. You get to see the girls do all these fabulous things and I am busy working. You are so lucky.”

She is absolutely right. I am so busy because I’m enjoying my kid’s childhoods and I am so freaking lucky! So, as I lay here at the end of a very very long week, I am reminded of how lucky I am to be able to actively be part of my kid’s lives. There are so many families out there that are working their asses off all day and coming home to work their asses off in their home and with their children all evening… but they don’t get all of the rewards. They don’t get to see their kids smiling while they try to belly dance with their Brownie pack, or see the pride on their faces as their hands touch the wall at the swim meet, or hear the laughter of their preschoolers while dancing with a special guest at school. 😞

Although this week was crazy and seemed to fly by in a blur of activity… I can clearly picture a snapshot in my mind of all the awesomeness of this week. I will keep those memories forever. 💛

Because I am so freaking… ridiculously… lucky.

My cup runneth over.

Speaking of luck, love, and parenthood… My cousin and her husband had a baby this past weekend! A little boy 💙.

Really makes me think. That is the 3rd baby born since my Mom died. Our family is growing and she doesn’t get the honour of seeing these beautiful little lives unfold.

This time of year, more than any other, makes me think of Mom. She loved the holidays. She would have loved seeing the Girl’s recitals, concerts and parties. I have a few girlfriends that have SuperMoms like I did. I get to see it right there. It makes my heart swell and break at the same time. I know if Mom was here my days wouldn’t be so busy. She would have happily taken half the load… No she would have demanded it. ðŸ’› She loved being a Nana. She gave 100% to being a Mom and being a Nana was no different.

She would have loved this week.

Me on the other hand… I ran into HBear’s teacher on Thursday and she asked me if I was ready for the weekend and I said, “I hate this weekend.” She literally laughed her ass off and told me that that statement was refreshing 😳😂.

So, this week I had to get both the Girl’s birthday invitations out. We had dance classes and we had to buy the Xmas dance recital tickets,

I also had to register the girls for winter swimming. Of course registration was on Tuesday at midnight and the last class was on Wednesday.

Figures.

So for the fourth time I signed SBean up for Sea Otter and I also put her in Salamander, just in case. HBear however asked if she could go in the next level of swim kids, on top of KISU! I thought this was a great idea because if she waited any longer I would have a hard time getting her to go swim with the young kids to complete her levels. Swim team ends at 4:15 and the only class available for her next level is at 5:00. I called the Community Centre to see what other parents do during that 45 minute break. They explained to me that I would have to pay $4.25 for public swim… Every Monday and Wednesday! That is absolutely ridiculous! For 10 classes that would be $85 just in public swim fees! I went on my Facebook Mom Site to see what other mothers do in this situation, apparently nobody has this problem and I’m a terrible mother for making my children swim during dinner time 😂. Of course I thanked everybody for their super helpful advice and waited patiently for a good suggestion. Apparently she doesn’t need to do her levels to get into life-saving! Perfect! I really don’t want to give them any more money based on that blatant cash grab. I know a lot of Moms bitched me out for trying to get away with free swimming but I honestly think that the parents that are paying for KISU and swimming lessons should be charged a discounted rate for public swimming in between. Just my opinion.

On a positive note, SBean managed to pass Sea Otter this time! Woot Woot! She is very excited to start Salamander next week.

On Wednesday morning I was super stoked to start a yoga class but completely forgot about my preschool board meeting. The Kids play while we have our meeting.

Seriously?! I need to start writing things down! I have a long long long list of things to do in my brain and I keep on dropping the ball! Brutal. I have this fancy app that even colour coordinates my shit, the only problem is I have to make time to enter my shit into the app LOL

After music class on Thursday morning,

SBean had a special activity at her preschool. One of the preschool teachers from the dance studio came to do a 30 minute lesson with the kids. She was amazeballs! She kept 20 kids constantly entertained for the entire 30 minutes. Every child was full of smiles!

As soon as the as it was over we raced to pick up HBear for Gifted,

and then we ran into the Wholesale Club to pick up containers for hot lunch the next day. I picked up my takeout containers and as I was walking to the checkout I looked down an aisle and saw a guy walking towards me with a pack of Coca-Cola’s. As I was standing in line, I was next to go through, he walked up behind me. He put his drinks on the belt and then he walked right in front of me. I said, “sir. You’re not thinking about cutting me are you?” He turned to me and started yelling at me! Insisting that he was there before me. I looked at the cashier incredulously and she looked at him then she looked at me and she shrugged and nodded towards him? I was Gobsmacked! This “gentleman” continue to yell at me so I picked up my takeout containers and went to the other line which had 7 people in front of me! Seriously? Mind blowing.

Before we picked up HBear from Gifted to get her to Performing Arts class, SBean and I baked some cookies for the bake sale. I am a terrible baker. I don’t bake very often. I saw this recipe and I thought how easy is that? I can do that. And it turns out… I can! These turned out so well that my amazing baker mother-in-law asked me for the recipe! These are my new favourite cookies. 💛

Cranberry White Chocolate Cookies
Adapted from The Frugal Girls

1 box white cake mix
1¼ cups dried cranberries
1¼ cups white chocolate chips
2 eggs
½ cup oil

Preheat oven to 350.

Combine cake mix, eggs, and oil in large mixing bowl, and beat well.

Stir in Cranberries and White Chocolate Chips, and stir well with a spoon.

Chill dough in refrigerator for 1 hour.

Drop onto ungreased cookie sheet in rounded balls.

Bake for approx. 8 – 10 minutes or until done.

When I picked up HBear from Performing Arts I had dinner ready. HBear practised her spelling words, took a bath and then we were off to Brownies.

December is kicking my ass and we still have 2 weeks left of November! I may need a Christmas miracle to keep this train on the tracks! By Friday I felt like I had already put in a full week… but the fun was just beginning.

Friday morning I hauled 25 boxes of apple juice into the back of my van. Dropped SBean off at Grandma and Grandpa’s and quickly ran to Staples… That will be a story for another day LOL then I hauled ass to the school to get ready for hot lunch. When I pulled up at the school I lugged all 25 boxes of apple juice into the hallway and then went to set up the tables. As I was walking down the hall carrying a table, a teacher walked by and said, “that looks heavy.” 75 minutes and 150 pasta dishes later I saw the same teacher walking down the hall as I carried the tables back to where they belonged. She said, “Didn’t I just see you carrying the table that way?” Story of my life lady 😜. After I picked up SBean we came back to the school to pick up HBear and to set up for the Vendor Fair the next day. Of course, there were tables to be set up LOL at 4:30 the same teacher walked by me as I was carrying a different table down the hall. We both erupted in laughter. 😂

Once my booth was all set up to sell apple juice for SBean’s Preschool at HBear’s Vendor Fair, see how I did that? I got to fundraise for both kids at the same time! Genius 🎉.

By 7:15 the next morning the whole Pham Dambly was at the pool for HBear’s first Mini Meet! After getting a $20 penalty on my last swimming invoice for not volunteering at the last meet… I was more than happy to time keep this time. It was cool! HBear did awesome and Papa, Grandma, Grandpa, Daddy, and SBean were all there cheering her on!

As soon as the last swimmer was out of the pool I took off. Ninja and the Grandparents took SBean to soccer and I went to the Vendor Fair! I sold apple juice and hot cider by the glass from 10 till 2 with my new friend from the preschool.

The next day was SBesty’s birthday. She is a Gilmore Girls freak like I am so I asked MBesty to make her a cool mug. She owns Beyond the Stitch and makes all these awesome personalized items!

We went out for coffee first thing in the morning and Ninja took the Girls to the park.

When I got home it was time to get ready for HBear’s Performing Arts recital. My in-laws and I went to the recital and Ninja and Dad took SBean to the Children’s Showcase performance.

HBear has been on stage before but she has never performed a piece by herself. I was extremely nervous for her. This was the first time I even got that nauseous feeling. I thought of her forgetting the words like she had many times as she practised them over the past week. She would be very hard on herself and would be very embarrassed. As she took the stage I crossed my fingers and held my breath.

She did it! She was awesome! I’m so proud of her, it takes so much courage to get up in front of 40 to 50 people and recite/act out a poem!

When the recital was over we picked up HBear’s PSBesty and we headed to Get Bent. Our Brownie pack was taking Bollywood lessons to earn their key to the arts. Our task was to do a dance from another culture. It was a blast! I am so uncoordinated it is embarrassing. When I am in a room with a whole wall of mirror trying to shimmy, it just ain’t pretty 😂 but it sure was fun!

Next week is SBean’s birthday!!!

The fun just doesn’t stop.… 😜
