Chicken Tortellini Soup, Digging for Treasure and Christmas Spirit

Christmas is a state of mind and that special feeling that only comes with an empty bank account.

Melanie White

I touched on an important point in my last post. I feel waaaay less holiday stress this year… I don’t know if it because I’m not dreading another Christmas without my Mom or because I have had less stress and drama in my personal/social life. Besides hot lunch, which has been running rather smoothly, I’m just a parent that can volunteer if I choose to. I have actually been able to attend events this year! I know, crazy! So, without that added stress I’ve been able to find more holiday spirit than I have in years!

Unlike SBesty.

After listening to me stress out last year she convinced me to take a step back from the drama. She must have thought I was embellishing the truth because she decided to take a step UP 😂. She went from attending 1 meeting with me at the end of the year to becoming the Secretary! Yeah, she goes hard.

This year she has been involved in EVERYTHING. She head up a new cookie dough fundraiser, she helped with the welcome BBQ, started a safety initiative and headed up the committee for much needed Traffic Calming in our school zone… and we’re only 3.5 months in!

This week Ninja and I went to the traffic calming meeting where a city planning engineer put on a presentation showing us the proposal that will go before the Council. SBesty did great!

You know what was greater? Going… finding out the info and then… leaving! No clean up, no questions, no fights, no ridiculous opinions! I was all settled into bed and our next episode of GOT was just beginning when I got a bing on my phone… What happened next is best explained in SBesty’s words…

Let me just take a minute to set a scene in your mind before I introduce myself. I’m sure it will be one that all you parents out there can relate to. Do you ever have that moment where you’ve just sat down after a day of pure insanity? That moment where you’ve just poured yourself a glass of wine, the kids are settling down for bed, and your think to yourself: Self, you’re in the home stretch, you can start to relax now! Only to hear a little voice pipe up with the inevitable ‘mommy I need some water’ request?

All the while you are thinking: Ha, of course you do! You little shit’s always need water once you go to bed. Every. Freaking. Night! So you wait for it…The repetitive, ‘Mommy I need some water’ requests that seem to go on FOREVER. Today for me, it continued of course, but with a twist from the usual…

Darling Son: “Mommy I need some water to flush the coins down my throat!”

Mom: “I’m sorry, WHAT did you just say?”

#&$^&^#?!! {#($*#($&@!}*???!  That is a picture of what my brain did at that moment. Disorganized chaos, with a lot of punctuation for emphasis…

I take a deep breath and regroup, and using my parenting voice I gently and calmly say: “Sweetie, did you just tell me that you have coins in your throat?”

My blond-haired darling solemnly looks up at me and croaks out, “Yes mommy, I have two coins and they’re stuck in my throat.”

“You mean pretend coins right?” I continue in my parenting voice.

“No mommy real coins, two! I put them in my mouth, and my tongue swallowed them, I didn’t.” he replied.

“Oh, okay then. Well let’s go get your shoes, because we need to go to the hospital.” At this point his eyes well up and tears start to flow…

Okay, so that is how my parenting conversation went. The conversation in my head went more like this…

Darling Son: “Mommy I need some water to flush the coins down my throat!”

In my Head: WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU JUST SAY?????!!!! Please be lying! Please be lying!

Parent Voice “Sweetie, did you just tell me that you have coins in your throat?”

Darling Son: “Yes mommy, I had two coins and they’re stuck in my throat.”

In my Head: Oh Shit! Oh Shit! How is this even possible? SAY SOMETHING IMPORTANT WOMAN!!!!

Parent Voice “You mean pretend coins right?”

Darling Son: “No mommy, 2 real coins! I put them in my mouth, and my tongue swallowed them, I didn’t.”

In my Head: Shit! Shit! Shit! You’re not lying! PANIC, PANIC, PANIC! MUST DO LIFE-SAVING THINGS!!!

Don’t Panic! He’s swallowing and talking so they probably went all the way down.

STAY FUCKING CALM WOMAN! You’ve got this! You do stupid mental drills in your head for this kind of thing all the time because you’re weird. It’s emergency go time, let’s do this! Go team Mom! BOOM!

Parent Voice: “Oh, okay then, well let’s go get your shoes, because we need to go to the hospital.”

And yeah… There they are, both of them, in the belly.

You would think he would have stopped at one, but it seems like my son isn’t a quitter.  That is me looking for the silver lining. I need focus on silver linings today because apparently I need to be digging for treasure for the next week until these things come out. Oh the joys of motherhood. So if you are having a rough week, just hold close to your heart, the knowledge that at least you’re not the parent who is sifting through poop this week! See your day is better already right? You’re welcome. ☺

The promised introduction…

My name is Danielle. I live in Penticton with my husband, our two children (4-year old son & 7-year old daughter), and our two giant dogs.

😂 She had to keep “Darling Son” home for the week while she was on Poop Patrol. (did you just sing Poop Patrol Poop Patrol we’ll be there on the double? 🎶 Yeah, me too 😂).

While she was digging for treasure… so was I.

Christmas chocolate treasure!

Ninja bought me a wonderful Purdy’s advent calendar this year and my nightly ritual has been Heaven. Every night I take my beautiful box down off the shelf, untie the ribbon, find the next little treasure box, take my delectable chocolate out, retie a perfect little bow and put it back on the shelf.

Thank you Ninja 💛

This week we finished up our gifts for the Girl’s classmates. I love this treat! It was easy and not expensive. The only downside was that the week AFTER I bought all the Goldfish… my PC points offered 3000 points for every $10 spent on Goldfish 😡!

I printed the tags from Ribbons & Glue

For their teachers, dance teachers and yoga teachers we made Scent of the Season. I made these before and they are SO easy PLUS they look lovely and they smell divine! This year we didn’t use dried cranberries and we put in an actual orange.
This year we are shaking it up a bit. I think I dread the holidays because Christmas Eve was my favourite night of the year. My Mom made Christmas Eve my favourite night of the year. For the past 3 years I have been trying to do it. Make dinner without her, have my InLaws over, try to cheer my Dad up, and make it fun for the Girls.

It’s just not happening. Making appies and a big dinner was OUR thing and I hate doing it without her. Planning special little surprises was fun and we would plan the whole holiday. We used to make a Christmas calendar and each day was a new Christmas event! We would fill 2 deep freezes with tasty confections and savoury treats. Now…  I end up getting bitchy and melancholy. This year we are trying something completely new in hopes that this night can become a favourite for the Girls and for Ninja and I.

This year I got roped into Daily Texts from Santa. An app that texts messages from Santa. It’s pretty cool actually for $10. You get 3 custom texts and if you enter a picture of your Xmas tree, on Xmas Day they will text you a picture of Santa dropping off gifts photoshopped into your living room! I used 1 of the custom texts to let the Girls know about a special Christmas Eve surprise!

This year I printed off labels and we made a Christmas Eve Box!

Inside are our Holiday necessities! Christmas PJs, Fuzzy Socks, Hot Chocolate & Mugs, Cotton Candy, Popcorn, A Xmas book and an Xmas movie!

We put it under the tree and the Girls are over the moon excited to open it on Christmas Eve. We will get into our Jammies and socks, grab our Cotton Candy, fill up our mugs with Hot Cocoa and go on a Christmas light hunt! When we get home we can pop the corn, watch the movie and then have family story time. I am more excited than the Kids I think!

1 more step towards healing my heartache.

HBear and I were sick this week. Like SICK. I made some comfort soup to combat our colds and keep it from spreading. I love this soup! I made it while Ninja and the Girl’s worked on their classmate gifts. It took less then 30 minutes to make this soup and it was freaking delicious! It is right up there on my list of top soups and I love soup!

Chicken Tortellini Soup
Adapted from A Spicy Perspective

1 tablespoon oil
1 large sweet onion, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
2 cups carrots, sliced
4 garlic cloves, pressed
2 chicken breasts
9 cups chicken broth
8.8 ounce package tortellini
2/3 cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons parsley, chopped
1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
1/2 teaspoon paprika
Salt and pepper

Place a large sauce pot over medium heat. Add the butter and chopped onions. Saute for 3 minutes to soften.

Then add the chopped bell pepper, carrots, and garlic. Saute another 3 minutes.

Add whole chicken breasts, chicken broth, thyme, crushed red pepper, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper to the pot. Bring to a simmer. Lower the heat a little and simmer 15 minutes, until the chicken in cooked through.

Remove the chicken and place on a cutting board. Then chop or shred the chicken and place back in the soup.

Turn the heat back to medium. With the broth still simmering, stir in the tortellini. Stir well so it doesn’t stick together.

Once the tortellini is cooked through, about 10-14 minutes, turn off the heat. Stir in heavy cream and parsley. Taste, then salt and pepper as needed.

This week a birthday package came from Uncle Smelly and Auntie! The Girls LOVE their gifts from them. They are the only ones without kids (although we are still holding on to hope 😉) but their gifts are ALWAYS spot on! It may be because they are big kids themselves lol. This year the Girl’s received a knitting craft, a book, a pottery wheel, and a “new” backpack. SBean HAD to wear it that very day… she now thinks she is a superhero… Captain Jolt 😂.

We finished up Brownies for 2016 with some good old fashioned caroling 🎤. We took the Girl’s to the Retirement home my Nana lived in. It was pretty amazing. It brought back memories of doing the exact same thing with my Brownie group in Winnipeg, so many years ago. The true spirit of Christmas is watching the elderly folk’s eyes light up with each song. Very special. They asked anyone who didn’t have the flu shot to wear a mask. We decorated them and not 1 girl had an issue with them. Lucky we wore them too because I would have hated to pass on our cold to them 😷!

Unlike HBear the marshmallow, SBean was born for the cold weather! It’s weird because HBear was born in Winnipeg and SBean was born here. As the temperatures get cooler she becomes happier?!?!

I was out finishing up my shopping… that’s right, finishing 🤗 and I decided to go to a local deli and get a sandwich. Best.. Sandwich. Ever. Love me some Il Vecchio!

Like I mentioned, HBear and I picked up a cold this week. On Friday morning HBear came into our room crying that her tummy and head hurt. She was on fire but she was shivering. She spent the whole day sleeping and whimpering. By 3pm I was in fever mode too.

Unfortunately Friday was our first snowfall of the year. SBean woke up vibrating with excitement while HBear mourned the fact that she had to watch the excitement from behind a window.

No shovelling. No playing. No sledding.

SBean and I went out to shovel while HBear looked on from the warmth of the house.

At least she got to participate in the hot cocoa part.

We spent the weekend sleeping and doing lego and puzzles. The calm before the storm.

I’m not sure how it happened as Friday was not my most active day lol but I won my Step Challenge this week! Yay! I used to rarely make my goals and now, most days I make them without even actively trying! I love my FitBit!

This weekend was supposed to be jam packed with fun! However, we had to cancel our plans in order to stay in bed and sweat it out.
HBear was devastated to miss her early Saturday morning Muffin Swim Meet 😞.

We were all gravely disappointed to miss the 5km Family Santa Run, we had all signed up for after the Swim Meet. It is an amazing cause, The Youth Outdoor Recreation Society is a subsidy program that generates funding for schools in the Okanagan Valley to invest in outdoor youth programming. All the runners wore Santa hats and it looked like a GREAT morning. I promised my bawling little Sickie that when we felt better, we would put on our own Santa hats and we would do the run. That seemed to set her mind at ease as she quickly fell back asleep.
So disappointed. I have always wanted to be in that scene with Jonathan Taylor Thomas, you know the scene from I’ll Be Home For Christmas…

Oh well, I guess we will make my fantasy become a reality next year.

On Sunday morning at 1am HBear woke up with her highest fever yet. Her eyes were rolling to the back of her head and her legs were rubber. She was bumping into walls and screaming that she couldn’t see. SO SCARY!!!! Apparently in scary situations like that I am the worst Mother ever because while she was fainting and screaming that she was blind I was yelling, “Stop this right now! Enough!” 😳 I obviously need to start mental drills like SBesty to get through shit like that! 😂 We laid her on the couch and Tylenol brought her temperature down. She fell asleep right away. Me… not so much. All I could think about was all those parents out there with really sick children. People like my BIL and so many others with kids sick with cancer. I laid in bed with cold sweats silently crying for them and their pain 😢. Even though I had a fever… I was freezing. I would not even go there. I couldn’t think about what I would do in their place. I could barely even hold it together and she just had a cold! Although my mind went to Scarlet Fever, Mono and meningitis 🙄

When she woke up at 6am her fever had broken and although she was still pale, I could tell she was on the mend. Unfortunately, we had a wonderful Mom and Daughter Date planned with her Besties on Sunday that we had to miss, lunch for 12 of us at Earls and then a production of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I wanted to make sure she got her rest and didn’t relapse for the holidays.

She was a trooper considering her disappointment. There were lots of hot tears… but she is now looking forward to so many exciting things like this week’s Xmas concerts, Christmas parties and pancake breakfast.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
