Our Podcasting Origin & Homemade Turkey Helper

The medium of podcasting and the personal nature of it, the relationship you build with your listeners and the relationship they have with you – they could be just sitting there, chuckling and listening… there’s nothing like that.

Marc Maron

This week on our podcast we talked a little bit about my blog! I thought it would only be fair to tell you a little bit more about my other hobby, How Was Your Week, Honey?

A few years ago Ninja came in contact with his long-lost cousin Diamond Dave. They had not spoken in a while and so Ninja asked him, “what have you been up to?” Well, he could not stop gushing about his latest hobby… Podcasting. Ninja and I had kinda heard of podcasting and had checked a few out ourselves because while I was on mat leave with HBear I started listening to parenting podcasts. Unfortunately at that time I was using my iPod and every time I wanted to update the episodes I had to plug it in to my computer. For a new Mom with baby brain that just didn’t work for me LOL so I quickly went back to listening to my old school music playlist.

Ninja however began listening to his cousin’s latest adventures. We were surprised to find out that Ninja’s Uncle, Triple D was also into the podcast scene! Soon after on one of our trips to Calgary, we met up with DD and Ninja did his first podcast. He was hooked 😂. He began chatting with DD’s podcasting buddies and found that he had a lot in common with so many of them! It also brought him closer to his family and Ninja and his Uncle soon began recording their own podcast, Our Liner Notes! Great name hey? Of course I can’t take credit for it… Actually I can 😉. The premise of their show was to re-introduce albums to anyone that was missing them. Ninja and his Uncle, Triple D are big into music and each week they had a theme and they would each bring 5 songs from 2 separate albums that fit the theme. They discussed their memories regarding the songs and the albums and pass along little known facts about the bands. For the next year they kept busy recording usually once a week. I could tell Ninja was invested.

Sometimes Ninja and Triple D would have guest on! In December 2015 I was invited on Episode 5: Merry Maier Xmas to share my favourite Christmas album! I was hooked 😂

After Triple D began a work schedule that took him around the world, Ninja found that he had to find more guests to fill-in if he wanted to continue recording. I was more than happy to oblige! Together we did Episode 7: Mr. and Mrs So-Cal and then we did Episode 33: Family By Numbers with HBear!

It was at this point when we began to discuss our own podcast ideas. Ninja had introduced me to a few of his favourite independent podcasts and I was shocked! They sounded like real podcasts LOL I mean, they had quality sound, quality content, and hit on so many of my favourite topics. Pretty soon I was listening to music podcasts, sports podcasts, and couples podcasts! Soon I came to realize why Ninja spent so much time on Twitter and dm’ing the network he was creating for himself.

While I was away for 11 days in Cochrane helping my Sis when CabbagePatch was born, we would talk every night. Every night I said, “how was your day, Honey?”

BAM!

It occurred to us that we just figured out our very own podcast… How Was Your Week, Honey? We decided that every weekend we would have a date night and talk about our week and our tag line would be, a conversational podcast between two middle aged parents who used to be cool but now drive a mini van. I realize that sounds boring LOL But we decided that every once in a while if nothing out of the ordinary happened that week we could have different segments like songs of the week, in the news, entertainment/sports, and of Canadianity. Now, not all of these segments were in our initial plan but over the past year and a half we have figured out things that we enjoy talking about and that listeners enjoy listening to.

In time, I became part of Ninja’s podcast circle and we hopped on the Our Liner Notes coattails and recorded Episode 56: A Shameless Plug

Through podcasting we have made some incredible friends! If I can say anything about podcasting that you may not know about is that there are people out there, creative people, putting their thoughts into the universe waiting to discuss them with someone… Anyone. Our little podcast community have become real life friends to us. We were lucky enough to meet the Milroys from the Full of Fibre podcast in Calgary this past spring and they came out to visit us just this past week. We have been guests on some incredible shows and have had some amazing guests on ours! We have been involved in fantasy hockey pools, double dates over Skype LOL, and almost our entire Fitbit group is made up of some pretty phenomenal podcasters. Next week we are even going to Portland to podcast with our friend from The Reasons Are Several!

That’s another thing, we have met people from all over the world! Ninja has done a podcast with a fella from England, watches CFL games via Skype with his Besty from Pennsylvania, and we get new musical options from our friends in LA! These are people that listen to our podcast and Twitter their thoughts to us, or DM us for a more in-depth conversation. We get to talk about the American economy and political landscape. We get to talk about different sports and different college experiences. We have met people with different religions and even some that like soccer 😳. In the past year and a half we have made so many new friends and have been introduced to so many new ideas and thoughts, I can honestly say it has been life-changing.

Another aspect of podcasting that has changed things is the fact that we now have one day a week that we dedicate to hanging out with each other. In the past there were so many times when we said, “why don’t we go out for a drink and just sit and chat?” Or “Let’s go to a movie?” Or how many times we would we go for days only discussing the kids, the plan, or the list. You know what list I’m talking about LOL the list of things we need to get done! Now, we have a dedicated time to just talk about us! Yes, we discuss the kids because well let’s face it, they say the funniest shit 😂 but most the time we are just… Talking… To each other… About grown up things and I have to say, it’s great! We laugh, a LOT! It honestly feels like dating each other again. Who knew there were so many things about him that I didn’t know yet?

We usually record Friday or Saturday evening. In the winter we record in the garage and in the summer we podcast by the fire in the backyard. Sometimes we sip on water or tea and sometimes we have an adult drink or 2. Sometimes we get hammered and sometimes we do crazy shooter challenges and get super hammered 😂. All in all we have a fantastic time and we hope our listeners do too! We encourage anyone and everyone to share their opinions via Twitter, Facebook, or email! You can find our podcast on iTunes or Stitcher at How Was Your Week, Honey? or Chris’s at Our Liner Notes. You can reach me on Twitter @kmaemaier or Ninja @ChrisMaierBC or the show @HWYWHoney or Ninja’s show @olinernotes. You could also email us at hwywhoney@gmail.com!

So there you have it! A little bit about why we have a podcast, what we talk about, where to find us and what it means to us!

*Disclaimer* While my blog is usually PG our podcast is definitely rated E for explicit. It is an adult show and not meant for children’s ears.

This week we had some VERY special guests! Neil and Annaleis from Dark Angels and Pretty Freaks! They are a very well established podcast out of Napa Valley and like us, they are a married couple that generally talk about their week and their lives. They also have a Vlog on YouTube called Halos and Heathens. They are super cool and interesting and I highly recommend them! They are 1 of the 1st podcasts I fell in love with and remain 1 of my favs to this day! Some other podcasts that I love are: 2 on 3, All Things Podcast, Best Neighbors Podcast, Deconstructing Dad Podcast, The Orville Lights, The 4th Line Podcast, and The Listening Party Podcast.

Check out Episode 81: DAPF Part 1 – Bon Jovi Bulge HERE Part 2 will be out later this week!

I’m already thinking about busy work/schoolnight dinners. I thought back to what I ate ate as a kid. I remembered Hamburger Helper 😳. By changing the ground beef to ground turkey and adding some veggies I made a healthier and WAY tastier version of an easy old meal!

Homemade Turkey Helper
Adapted from Countryside Cravings
NUTRITION: 493 Calories/serving

Makes: 5 Servings

1 pound ground turkey
1 small onion, chopped

1 bell pepper, chopped
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon parsley
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon cayenne powder
1 1/2 cups milk
1 1/2 cups beef broth
2 cups uncooked macaroni
1 can tomato sauce
1 cup cheese, shredded

Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the ground beef, onion, bell pepper, paprika, parsley, garlic powder, cayenne powder, and season with salt and pepper.

Stir in the milk, broth, macaroni and tomato sauce. Bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat to a simmer. Cook for 10-12 minutes or until pasta is tender.

Stir in cheddar cheese until melted.

This week the Girls were in their 2 “can’t wait for” camps! HBear was at her dance studio for Acro/Musical Theatre camp and SBean was at The Penticton Art Gallery for Outer Space Art Camp!

I took time to relax by myself for the 1st time this week. I got a pedi, a wax, and went shopping for some new fall clothes!

The Milroys brought us a few bags of Souptacular. They are bags of Canadian grown ingredients for soup! I added chicken stock and leftover roasted chicken from their visit and OMG! This was so good HBear asked for it for lunch for the next 2 days! While I was cooking the soup HBear went through my old boot bin 😂

2018 has been the second worst wildfire season in BC history. Right behind last year. The smoke has been so bad! The worst I have ever seen it. Our air quality has been at 10+ for days.

On Friday HBear’s dance camp put on a little recital! It was awesome! They surprised the kids with super awesome face painting and they all looked and danced amazing!

While I was watching HBear, Ninja was at Bean’s art show!

SBean went to a surprise bday party for 1 of her KBesties.

The next day we sent her a thank you note!

SBean bought herself a new LOLPet 🙄 and they FaceTimed HBear’s KBesty in Calgary to share the fun with her 😂

On Sunday the smoke was really bad and SBean has already been on her puffer for the past while so we hungout inside. SBean and I snuggled and watched golf while Ninja taught HBear how to play poker. She has been bugging him to teach her for a while 😆.

On Monday we woke up to sunshine and blue skies after much needed rain fell throughout the night. We took advantage and went to the beach/parks.

1 week left of summer holidays! I hope you make it a gooder!
